Fun Facts About Creole Tomatoes

  • Creole Tomato season typically lasts from early Spring to late Summer
  • Hybrids of the Creole are known by a variety of names: Better Boy, Celebrity, Beefmaster, Big Boy, and for late-season tomatoes, Solar Set and Florida.
  • Characterized by their greenish, lumpy, oddly-shaped nature, some splitting on the top because of a rainy Spring season.
  • “Grainy and meaty, but tender” are words used to describe this southern wonder
  • Designated the official vegetable plant of Louisiana in 2003 (even though, technically, the tomato is a fruit)
  • Can only grow in certain part of south Louisiana where the soil is “just right,” usually in the Plaquemines Parish region.
  • Believed to be poisonous until mid 19th century
